CARING SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WHO CARE FOR OTHERS
People in Cornwall who are involved in the care of another person are being invited to come to a free course designed to equip them with the skills not just to help them in their caring role, but to nurture themselves.
The three-day Caring for the Carer courses are being run by Penwith Community Development Trust (PCDT), with funding from Big National Lottery Awards for All, in venues across Cornwall starting next month. They are open to anyone aged 18 or over.
PCDT employment and learning manager Jenny Tarvit said: “There are support workers for carers, and the NHS has a carers hotline – but we found little training that was specifically for carers, to help them develop healthy ways of coping with their role.
“Caring for another person can be rewarding – yet at the same time, it can mean that carers are left with little time to focus on themselves, or identify their own needs. The course provides the opportunity to do just that.”
She added: “These courses will offer a safe environment in a small group with other carers: there will be no more than eight people attending each one. They include a recognition of the impact of caring, and will help carers to develop coping strategies, plan for contingencies, look after their own needs and reduce stress.
“This is an excellent opportunity for carers to get some support and learn new ways of managing their caring role.”
Lunch will be provided, along with travel costs, a course handbook, and a small contribution towards care costs during the three days that the carer is attending the course.
Course dates are:
Venues are flexible, and will be determined in accordance with needs identified in different areas of Cornwall.
